CBTC—it's just what you'd expect from Union Switch & Signal, the industry's leader in rail safety, reliability, efficiency and dispatching solutions since 1881. While our technologies continue to advance, our mission remains the same-to make your rail network safer, more reliable, and more productive than ever before. Discover how we can keep your business on track.

It's a fact-Communication-Based Train Control (CBTC) shows enormous potential for the transit industry, both in ensuring safety and in maximizing rail capacity. In purchasing a CBTC solution go with the experience of a proven leader.
For 125 years, Union Switch & Signal has set the pace for the industry in the development of reliable signaling and train control, wayside equipment, and relays. Today, US&S is applying this unique knowledge to the development of advanced rail transit control systems that build upon traditional signaling with a new generation of innovative technology. Since its inception, we have been a participant in the development of CBTC as an initial member of WG2, which has set the IEEE Standard 1474.1T for performance and functional requirements.
Before you make your investment in CBTC, make sure it's a dependable system built on solid experience. Then choose Union Switch & Signal.

In creating our new CBTC solution, we have developed and assembled an advanced set of best-in-class sub-systems that are unrivalled for their robust service and reliability while adhering to the IEEE Standard 1474.1T for CBTC Performance and Functional Requirements. When configured, they create a fully integrated and flexible platform that can enforce your business objectives across the board.
Central Office
US&S Central Office & Planning is the industry's first choice for dependable operational control that is scalable from a single-line metro installation to a continent-sized railway system.
In managing such standard functions as advanced Computer-Aided Dispatch (CAD) and Centralized Traffic Control (CTC), Central Office's planning subsystem is powerful enough to regulate traffic to schedule or headway, even when unexpected events occur. Central Office's planning function can also help optimize network energy consumption by adjusting performance levels of those vehicles that are operating ahead of schedule.
With its unique distributed architecture, comprising both local and remote components, Central Office can adapt instantly to failures or anomalies within the network to protect against outages or disruptions of service.
Zone Controller
The US&S Zone Controller manages the movement authority limits of all trains within its zone of control. This unit communicates with adjacent zone controllers, interlocking controllers, and car-borne controllers in order to meet your specific operational headway requirements and to maintain overall line capacities safely.
US&S provides interlocking control with its CBTC system either as a new subsystem function or adapted to existing interlocking control systems when providing an overlay solution.
Car-Borne Controller
The US&S Car-Borne Controller vitally determines the vehicle position within your network base through an array of sensors, including beacons, speed sensors, accelerometers, and others. This controller then enforces the movement authority limits supplied to it by the zone controller assuring the safe movement of vehicles within the network.
Communications
Our CBTC platform is based upon industry-standard protocols, assuring interoperability with current and emerging open standards. This medium's bandwidth capacity can convey real-time performance data, video and audio from the vehicle to your control center providing higher levels of security and performance.
